Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone: 20th Anniversary Edition

It has been 20 years this 26 June, 2017 that J.K. Rowling brought to the Muggle world the magical journey of Harry Potter. The Philosopher’s Stone was first published by Bloomsbury and by the year 1999 it had already become New York Times bestselling fiction. The last 20 years have seen the release of six sequels and eight feature films belonging to the franchise. Despite the long tenure that has passed the enchantment of this series hasn’t faded. Let’s revisit the Philosopher’s Stone and learn some fan trivia from the new house edition.

The story of a grief-stricken orphan, Harry Potter, shunned and tortured by his aunt and uncle and constantly bullied by their son strikes chord instantly with the readers. When this young boy is made aware of his wizarding heritage and is rescued from the cupboard under the stairs that he was forced to live in throughout his childhood, our heart goes out to him.

The precision and meticulousness that Rowling has shown in her planning and description of the wizarding world is absolutely brilliant. The setting of this world is similar to the Victorian era. Electricity and modern appliances are never used by wizards and witches and their sole resort is magic. However, this magic needs to be learned to hone and control and the best school of witchcraft and wizardry is situated in London, Hogwarts. It is not just children and teenagers who are awed by the castle of Hogwarts. Adults are equally enchanted by the charms of these separate lives that the magical folks live. Personally, I have been amazed every time I have read Philosopher’s Stone, whether it be at 11 or 23 years of age. The fight against evil personified by Lord Voldemort or He-who-must-not-be-named, the resolution to stand together with friends and understanding that love is the most powerful thing in this world – ensure that this creation by Rowling is a magnificent read for every reader.
