I am not sure if you know but I am a foodie, also I breathe air. You know, just stating the obvious. So getting books that are written to appreciate and emphasise on different kinds of food and ingredients, can only make me ecstatic. The lovely folks over at Aleph Book Company had sent over two such books. Read on to find out.

Most of us have heard this term “Super foods” a bunch of times before and have surely come across the fact that there are many kinds of edible items that are supremely beneficial for her brain, essentially our memory and reasoning capability.

Shipra Khanna introduces us to this whole new world of every day items that we don’t pay much heed to and end up ignoring from our diets that can increase our every day brain utilisation and give the much needed exercise to our mind.

I had been looking for healthier eating options and this book came at the perfect time. Khanna meticulously talks about specific vegetables such as beet and broccoli, also salmon, chicken and tops them up with unusual recipes that are quick and easy to make. Trust me, most of those recipes have been tried and tested by yours truly.

Food for the Soul

The Lucknow Cookbook by Chand Sur and Sunita Kohli

Written by a mother-daughter duo, this book has recipes that will touch your heart and purify your soul. I know I am being mighty dramatic but something about Lucknavi food just happens to drive me crazy. Whether it is their Galouti Kebabs or the lip-smacking Biriyani or the halwa for the sweet tooth, there is a certain authenticity and intimacy in Lucknow cuisine that can make any foodie fall in love.

The book has been handcrafted not only with expertise but also with memories and if you are from Lucknow, I can wager that you will start missing your home made food. Out of more than 100 recipes, we tried out Khichhra, which was essentially mutton cooked with lots of lentils and the infamous Dahi chicken and the Aam Sherbet and needless to say, they turned out great.

Sur and Kohli have created a cookbook that is more than its recipes. It tells a story of days bygone and culture that has evolved over the years. The Lucknow Cookbook is a pleasure to hold and even more enjoyable to read gradually like a jigsaw puzzle, piecing together various lost memories.
