Dark Circles by Udayan Mukherjee

Dark Circles traces the timeline of a family that is drastically torn apart because of one mistake of a mortal human that can hardly be called a tragedy but tragic it is, indeed, to witness how slowly one by one each of the family members are affected by the dark vines of melancholy.

The book largely deals with mental illness and depicts how quickly and ably depression can kill the essence of life and how it works its way into a human mind to force it to take drastic measures to flee from the cage that the mind has become. The Chatterjees suffer huge consequences due to an impulsive act committed by one of the family members. Although each of them are facing the same situation but how they face it and come out of it or not is what makes the book a delight to read.

By the end of the book, I was too broken and unhappy to hope for anything and that was the beauty of it. It gave me a glimpse into the affects of depression and the toll it takes on a human being.

I couldn’t have read this book at a better time since I have been going through some early signs of depression myself and reading the book gave me a clear idea of whatever I was going through although in completely different circumstances.

To say the least, Udayan Mukherjee has composed a beautiful novella that deserves to be talked about, discussed and encouraged to read.
